Switch Classroom’s no-prep lesson “Energy Efficiency” is the perfect supplement to the Earth Day focus of this month. It kicks off with a compelling video that students love. Dr. Tinker introduces students to the idea that energy efficiency is the most important step we can take in energy. Two important considerations are shared: eliminate wasteful use of energy and use less for higher efficiency. The first question is what is energy efficiency? Then, why is it important? Finally, what can I do to contribute to sustainability and conservation of energy through energy-saving practices?
After a brief, big-idea quiz, students can dive into a writing analysis activity. This exercise connects the big ideas of energy efficiency to devices in students’ own homes. Advanced students can try the free response question assignment. This assignment analyzes the numbers behind the energy usage of a gas dryer versus an electrical dryer, followed by a prompt for students to evaluate the efficiency of each. NGSS and APES alignment standards can also be found in the lesson overview.
The lesson’s central concept is how small changes in electricity usage can have a big impact on emissions, fuel consumption, and our wallets, which makes for a perfect Earth Day lesson! Our goal is to empower students to be problem-solvers, and that the path to energy efficiency can start at home. There are practical tips and common sense solutions that, when implemented, can save energy. As Dr. Scott Tinker states in the video, “The great thing is, this new technology is in your hands. In fact, it’s between your ears. All you have to do to use less electricity is to decide to.”
