Developing on Coal

Summary

Developing on Coal: Industrialization, Energy Access, and Tradeoffs Lesson

This lesson helps students examine why coal has played such a major role in industrialization and why it remains important in many developing countries today. Students explore how coal has historically powered factories, electric grids, transportation, and urban growth, and why countries often rely on it during periods of rapid economic development.

The lesson combines bell ringers, vocabulary, data analysis, and a hands-on coal and development simulation to help students think critically about energy tradeoffs. Students compare earlier industrializers such as the United Kingdom, Germany, and the United States with more recent coal boom countries such as Vietnam and Indonesia. They analyze how countries often shift away from coal only after building the infrastructure, industries, and wealth that coal helped make possible.

This is especially useful for teachers searching for environmental science lesson plans high school, energy development lesson plans, coal lesson high school, or environmental science activities high school that connect energy systems to economics, public health, and global development. The lesson works well in units on energy resources, industrialization, environmental impacts, or climate and policy.

Because the resource asks students to weigh affordability, reliability, jobs, pollution, and long-term development, it encourages systems thinking rather than simple pro-con lists.

Extend the Lesson:
Use the Starter Pack and Data Set to build background knowledge, then move into the Coal and Development Simulation for applied decision-making. Teachers may also want to connect this lesson to Coal, Energy Choices, or Environmental Impacts of Energy.
