If you’re a teacher wondering, “How do I talk to my students about media literacy?” then this media literacy resource is for you! In today’s information-driven world, developing media literacy is more essential than ever - especially when tackling complex topics like energy. As a critical part of our daily lives, energy is often surrounded by conflicting narratives and misinformation. This dynamic mini unit equips students with fundamental media literacy skills, empowering them to navigate and critically assess energy-related content with confidence. Dive into the world of energy through the powerful lens of media literacy and sharpen your students’ ability to separate fact from fiction.
The goal of this mini-unit is for students to be able to independently analyze and annotate a news article for bias and factuality. The “I Do, We Do, You Do” structure will provide students with plenty of opportunities to observe and practice the skill, before mastering it on their own. To build energy literacy and knowledge on foundational energy topics, students will use Switch Classroom’s energy lessons. Then, students will analyze a current Ground News energy article on the specific energy topic they studied with Switch Classroom, while utilizing Project LookSharp’s Media Decoding Resource.
We believe that media literacy should be at the forefront of any energy research, and are excited for teachers to use this resource in their classrooms! Download here and use year after year.
