Summary
Your one-stop hub for everything we shared at ESfS
Earth Science for Society (ESfS) is a free, family-friendly Earth science exhibition in Calgary organized by the CSEG Foundation. The event features hands-on exhibits and interactive learning experiences that highlight the role of Earth science in energy, resources, and everyday life.
Switch Classroom was invited to host a hands-on energy exploration exhibit at ESfS. If you connected with us at the event or are discovering these resources afterward, this page brings together all of the lessons, student guides, alignment materials, and digital resources we featured so you can use them in your classroom.
Hands-On Exhibits at ESfS
Play-Doh Electric Circuits Lab
Visitors built simple electric circuits using Play-Doh, LEDs, and batteries. Through experimentation, participants explored conductivity, open and closed circuits, and how electricity flows.
Together, visitors discovered that for the LED to turn on, the circuit must form a complete loop that allows electricity to flow.

Wind Energy Engineering Challenge
Participants designed, built, and tested small-scale windmills using recycled materials such as cardboard and paper. By adjusting blade shape, size, and angle, visitors investigated how wind energy can be converted into electricity.
This activity demonstrated real-world engineering practices, including testing, modifying, and improving designs.
