BC – Science 5 Alignment Guide

Summary

The Switch Classroom BC Science 5 curriculum alignment guide helps teachers connect lessons directly to provincial standards while supporting students in developing foundational science and inquiry skills. Each activity is mapped to competencies such as questioning and predicting, processing and analyzing data, planning and conducting, evaluating, applying and innovating, and communicating. This ensures classroom work aligns with expected outcomes while engaging students in hands-on learning.

The guide shows how Switch Classroom lessons address science areas including electricity, energy transfer and conservation, and environmental impact, alongside social studies areas such as human–environment interactions, resource development, and decision-making.

Highlighted lessons include Introduction to Natural Gas, which combines bell ringers, vocabulary review, and data set analysis before individual practice. The Science of Natural Gas lab offers a deeper look at natural gas properties, while Introduction to Hydropower gives students a group challenge through the Build a Waterwheel Activity. Switch On: Hydropower in Africa provides a virtual case study of the GERD in Ethiopia. Finally, Science of Coal explores coal’s role and impacts, complemented by a video on coal’s advantages, challenges, and emission-reduction approaches.

The BC Science 5 curriculum alignment guide provides teachers with a clear roadmap for integrating Switch Classroom lessons into standards-based instruction.
