Introduction to the Electric Grid – Data Set
Summary
This electric grid data analysis worksheet builds data literacy using two global tables: total electricity generation by region and electricity distribution losses. Students identify trends over time, compare regions, calculate percent losses, and explain why some regions lose more electricity during delivery.
This data set is part of the full Electric Grid lesson plan and prepares students for designing their own grid model.
What students do
- Interpret multi-year data tables
- Compare regional changes in generation and losses
- Calculate loss percentages using 2023 data
- Explain possible causes of higher losses, including infrastructure and theft
- Write their own question using the data and answer it
How to use it
- Assign after the video vocabulary activity so students can apply terms
- Use as partner work with a short whole-class debrief
- Use question 5 as an assessment prompt
